How far is 6.2km?

I found out yesterday that 6.2km is roughly equivalent to the distance between my house at Jalan 3/14, Seksyen 3 to Ariani Bangi in Seksyen 9. That is far!

But you did it Jasmin! Read more about Jasmin in Langkah Ceria Nov 2014 here

The day

Today is the day for UPSR result to be announced. I'm praying for Irdina to get whatever she wants for the exam.... I hope it will not disappoint her. Or me.... I have to remind myself this is not everything. I have to teach myself and my beloved daughter that there is more to life than this. If things don't go as we expected, move on and be ready for the next challenge. Be able to cope with situation is far more important than the result itself. I have to portray to my kids that there is something larger than exams. This is just little milestones along the journey to achieve our dreams.

Managing and coping with office expectation

Read this article at Business Insider here. Useful for me to dodge unnecessary stress at work.....

13 Things Successful People Do In The First 10 Minutes Of The Workday

Point 1:

“The first few minutes at the office can be the most stressful because there’s a level of anxiety about what you may face: a sudden onslaught of urgent emails; last minute crises or meetings; a call to stop by the boss’s office; a cranky coworker, and so on. It takes greater self-awareness, a positive mindset, and self-training each morning to counter what feels like negative gravity pulling you down as you face overwhelming demands.”

Point 2:
Successful people tend to thrive on routine and habits. “Creating consistent habits is largely what makes them successful,” he explains. “And a key time for habit-forming practices is at the start of the day.” in other words, follow a routine each morning to add some level of predictability to an otherwise unpredictable time of day.

These are the 13 things:
1. They reflect.
2. They take a moment to pause and be present.
3. They get comfortable.
4. They review their to-do list, make any necessary adjustments, and mentally map out their day.
5. They prioritize.
6. They stretch, stand, and walk.
7. They take time to greet their team.
8. They take a temperature read of their staff/coworkers.
9. They organize their work space area.
10. They strategically check email.
11. They anticipate and avoid distractions.
12. They smile and laugh.
13. They take a moment to be grateful.

I should turn this into my morning routine and habits....

Setting targets

Article from Business Insider

This Is The Internal Grading System Google Uses To Grade Its Employees — And You Should Use It Too here

Key points learnt:

I should set objectives that are
  • ambitious
  • challenging but doable (not 'Oh! I know that's easy peasy!'

The Key Results
  • are clear and achievable
  • are quantifiable
  • lead to objective grading

Objective should be definitive and quantifiable
Use % e.g
x    I want to complete whatever been set this year
OK I want to improve report submission on time by 15% from last year

Set a quarter and annual OKR
Annual is the umbrella and evolve as the year evolves.
Quarter OKRs do not change. 4-6 OKR per quarter. Aim for 0.6 - 0.7 Getting 1 means the key result is too easy. Review and reflect if get 0.4 or lower. However, time spent should be focusing on the goals, not the results.

Internalise OKR
OKR could be a profile if you need to explain what you do and what you have achieve.
So it shouldn't be used by management to determine promotions. It should be used by employees to keep an eye what they have accomplished

OKR

Thinking of applying this to be able to get home early next year as well as setting OKR for the family!

Nominated for Best Employee 2013/2014

I've been nominated! Am I happy? Maybe....

Is this an achievement? Maybe, on paper. It's supposed to be a recognition for all the hard work I've done.

Did I work hard in 2013/2014? Hell yeah! I've worked hard since I worked at the company!

Only now they recognize your hardwork? That's my personal feel. The funny thing about this award is, you should apply to be nominated, YOURSELF... So to me, it's more like you're recognizing yourself. So I never applied. I can do that myself and personally reward myself. If I ever applied, it would be more because of the 3 months personal parking space reward. But I never did even for this nomination, my superior did.

I can be bitter or feel good about this nomination. Bitter because the recognition is damn too late for me to feel appreciated by the company. I won't say I feel good because I know the process that goes behind the nomination.

All I care about is what to wear and who to bring on that day.

Alhamdulillah! Thank you Allah! Thank you for the strength you've given me to survive in this life....

Well done Jasmin!

We went for the Langkah Ceria Nov last Sunday. Left the house and reached Presint 2 at about 7.30ish. It was 2nd time for me but 1st for the kids.

I was so proud of Jasmin and still am because she finished the 6.2km walk! She had never done any -thons  before (be it walkathon, marathon, fun run), 'merentas desa' may be the farthest.

To finish or not to finish?
Half way, she started grunting. She really really slowed her pace as she started feeling tired from the walk. Normally, as parents we would quickly think our kid may not be able to finish it. We saw kids or even adults resorted to the easy way by raising hands and stop the marshals on motorcycle to get rides to the finish line (it was allowed because it was not a race). A woman even made remarks when she saw Jasmin's faint face and suggested me to stop the marshal. I was not sure whether to stop the marshal as well for Jasmin. My dilemma was whether to let her stop or push her to finish until the end.  And my next actions were largely due to my own experience triumphing my own self doubt.
Picture for Lutfi's sake

Actually this was he interested in

Lutfi's number won a lucky draw prize!

Own experience
I was 19 and did a mini 'expedition' under Duke of Edinburgh's Award in a group of 4. On the last day, I nearly cried because I was so so tired. It was Day 3 and I was only focusing on my bruised feet and how tired I was. I grunted, complained but no one pitied me because everyone was in the same boat. I still continued because I had no choice but to continue. I nearly regretted joining the expedition because it was really hard for me back then.
Then, something amazing happened. When I saw the last checkpoint a few hundred meters away, I wanted to finish it so bad that I RAN! I was puzzled because I myself didn't know where the strength came from. Thinking about it, now I know what they mean by focus, inner strength and Nike's tag line 'Just Do It'. We are able to do anything, it is just our own negative mind that we need to deal with.

Belief
Although Jasmin seemed tired, I somehow have this belief she actually could finish the walk. I didn't want to provide her the option of 'stop halfway and try again next time'  because it was not a race so she could do it at her own pace. She's healthy, not over sized, still young. She should be able to do it. We should be focusing on finishing the walk, not the hardship and tiredness. I know she was thinking that she could not do it and want to give up.

I wanted her to finish the walk. I could easily asked the marshal to send her to the finish line and I think that was what she wanted when she thought she could not go on. Instead, we stop a while at a bench. I said it was a break before we continue the walk. I kept saying we were getting nearer to the finish line. I kept saying that. Then we continued and I hugged Jasmin while walking. I tried to divert her attention to other things by singing, asking her questions etc. She was still grunting.

Motivation
Until I said to her,'If you finish the walk, we'll treat you to a sushi restaurant'. That was when we were about 800 - 900m to the finish line. Although still tired, she had stopped grunting and could walk without needing me to hug her.The reward offered was really a motivation for her to complete the walk. When she started to visualize eating sushi instead of tiredness, then her strength came from nowhere.

I asked her to touch the entrance balloon to indicate that she has completed her walk. She took the instruction well and went off leaving me behind. Then she did it!

YOU CAN DO IT IF YOU BELIEVE YOU CAN. SO JUST DO IT!
I don't know how I should feel. I'm glad I did not pity her and stop the marshal. I know I'm proud of her. I hope I have taught her a lesson in life and able to boost her self confidence....

Kain belum jadi baju

Ada a few kain tersimpan kat almari, belum jadi baju lagi. Koleksi sejak 2012! Mak aii! Outdated dah la baju aku nanti.

Type of person/wardrobe
I'm the type who wear kurung for functions and to work only. Masa lain, lebih suka pakai seluar or skirt, I call it 'casual wear'. To me, kurung is exclusive (or sebenarnya aku ni selebet orangnya?! Huhu)

Bertahun tak update baju kurung. Dulu dalam setahun, baju raya tu la baju kurung baru. Aku baru perasan kat opis, orang lain update baju kurung baru at least 2-3 pasang.

Pastu jenis yang tak gila kain. Beli kain kalau terjebak pergi kedai kain dengan kawan atau family member.

Knowledge & experience
Don't really know about kain, harga dan beza antara kain. Kalau kain bawah RM100, aku tahu beza tapi bila dah masuk kain RM100 ke atas tu yang agak blur sikit. Dah umur 35 tahun baru tahu kalau kat kedai kain, tingkat paling tinggi tu jual kain paling mahal.Teringat masa 1st time masuk GEDUNG (sbb kedai kain yg banyak tingkat) kain, meluru je masuk tingkat paling atas. Lengang. Naik sbb pikir senang survey dari atas sampai bawah dengan anggapan semua tingkat jual benda yang sama.

Masa tu dah janji ngan kawan nak jumpa kat kedai. Aku datang awal. Naik atas, lengang. Dan sekarang dah upgrade sikit la taste in kain. Kalau dulu, beli je mana yang nampak cantik regardless kain jenis apa.

My point
Dan masalahnya kalau orang selebet macam aku beli kain? Banyak kain belum jadi baju!!!

Antaranya:

  1. Batik beli kat Terengganu 2012
  2. Chiffon Vietnam 2012
  3. Adik ipar bagi beli kat Bandung 2012
  4. Jakel tanah hitam2013
  5. Jakel tanah biru 2013

Pastu, ni tambah lagi satu. Baru pesan 1 Thai Silk kat sepupu yang ada kat Bangkok (itu pun dia yang offer sape nak kirim)

Hai... kena start tempah baju ni!!!!!

Didiklah anak-anak mu

Ada 3 masa yang sesuai untuk menasihati anak-anak:

  1. Ketika dalam perjalanan di atas kenderaan
  2. Ketika sedang makan
  3. Ketika anak sakit

Menasihat, bukan membebel. Gunakan tone suara yang sesuai.

Jika aku sayangkan anak-anakku, didiklah mereka....

Peringatan untuk diri sendiri....

Low carb diet

Early this week I was focusing on getting to fit more physical activities in my routine. I was surveying for gyms around Bangi.

Yesterday, I suddenly remembered I have ketone sticks which I can use to see whether I'm on a right track with my diet. Despite restricting my food intake, the colour of the ketone stick didn't change. I was frustrated and puzzled.

So today, I search on the internet to understand ketosis process better.

This is so in line with what I want to improve in my next quest to weight management. I want to repeat my triumph last year and achieve my goal of 60kg.

I need to improve on my food intake decisions. Going to gym will follow later once I sort out on my diet plan.

Plan to reach my target

My goal is to be fit when I do my Haji, in sha Allah.
My current target now is to get back to my 64kg weight. Currently I am 68kg, gain of 4 kg. It is very hard for me to manage my eating habit although I've tremendously improved since I took Herbalife.

Last year was great. I managed to lose weight and fit into my old clothes. But the question how long can I maintain to stay healthy and fit?

Malaysian Airline 1st experience

There are so many reasons why I chose MAS for the Bali trip:

  1. Give kids to experience different flight operator and KLIA
  2. Easier to get to KLIA directly using ERL. I don't have to change to a bus ride  (although AirAsia has started operating in KLIA2 and it is actually easy to get to KLIA2 too)
  3. All in fare
  4. I can shop at the duty free at Satellite Building

When I was surveying for Bali flight tickets in March 2014, AirAsia was not offering cheap tickets but MAS was. The tickets priced almost the same so it was our rezeki.

I paid for seats to Bali (RM10 each) but not on the way back. So I chose all window seats when I bought the tickets online.

All in all, I feel grateful because what I wished for came true. Thank you, Allah!

Kasyif has graduated!

Last Saturday was Ihtifal Day for Little Caliph Kindergarten. I would say the management was very organized for the event. Kasyif took part in zapin dance and received compliments from the emcee. I personally think Kasyif was really good dancing to the rhythm and I was proud. He admitted he actually enjoyed doing the dance.
My dearest Kasyif, honey bee.... You're a big boy now. May Allah SWT give me strength to nurture you towards His path. You are lovable, funny, sporting, bubbly little boy. Don't lose you compassion towards others. Keep asking questions to satisfy your curious mind.

I love you with all my heart......
